California beach camping, Costa Rica style

Posted on: October 17 2011

Costa Rica Surf & SUP took an epic trip to California in September 2011.  Here is the story of our favorite campsite at Oceano Sand Dunes~

It was the best night sleep we had all week.  We were a little out of place with our three stand up paddleboards strapped to the top of our silver Toyota truck, but everyone was friendly. We drove past all the rednecks in search of a better place to camp.  We drove for several miles until we found a little piece of paradise just north of mile marker seven.  Nightfall was approaching quickly, so we pitched our two tents, made a nice campfire, cracked three beers, and put some baked beans in a pot on the fire.  We stayed up late, philosophized, and sold the world’s problems while puppy Mango sniffed to her hearts content.   We found a little piece of paradise amongst the rednecks.  The Oceano Sand Dunes can hold up to 1000 vehicles at 8 people per vehicles.  We were lucky to have a mere 300 folks as our neighbors. The park ranger said that when the place is maxed out, you cannot see the sand between the RV’s.  The long stretch of beach is known as the perfect place to bring dune buggies, quads, 4x4’s, and jacked up trucks.
