Benny and Kelsey made our trip! - My family and I have always wanted to learn to surf-- we booked a family lesson with Benny and Kelsey last week, and we loved it so much that we went back for two more lessons, and my son took a fourth private lesson with Kelsey. Both Benny and Kelsey take their job very seriously, so safety is their main concern-- but they also take fun very seriously! We laughed a lot and had an absolute blast with them during our time in Santa Teresa. Our three kids (ages 8, 8 and 11) not only learned to surf, but they have caught the surfing bug and want to keep it up-- all thanks to Benny and Kelsey! Learning to surf with them was the highlight of our trip. They also hooked us up with some great recommendations on things to do in the area as well as great places to eat. The "find" in Santa Teresa! - I initially contacted Costa Rica Surf & SUP in search of some general info, but once I received such warm response from Bennison, I knew that I wanted to surf with them. I had attended a different surf camp 6 years prior, and had such an amazing time, I had to return to CR in search of another amazing experience. In my mind, there were big shoes to fill. Once in Santa Teresa, and surfing with Bennison and Kelsey, my expectations were completely surpassed. They are incredible teachers! Their instruction is so thorough, and they have a keen ability to give you just enough information to progress you to the next step, without overwhelming you. Being from Minnesota, I often found the ocean intimidating. Within a few lessons I felt I had the tools to stay safe, and felt very comfortable in the water. By the end of my 20 days in Santa Teresa, I went from being a beginner surfer to catching an riding some impressive waves. I feel the key to their and my success was a gradual and steady progression. It really takes a great instructor to strike that balance, and I know from previous experience, not all instructors are adept at that. The best part is that Bennison truly cares to find out what it is you want to get out of your surf experience and she does everything in her power to guide you to that end. I did a lot of awesome things in CR, but nothing comes close to my time spent with the crew and friends of CR Surf and SUP! Benny and Al, you have founded a gem in Santa Teresa. Highlight of the trip-- thank you Benny and Kelsey! - My friends and I found Costa Rica Surf & SUP searching the internet when looking to add a SUP adventure to our vacation in Costa Rica. We could not have been luckier to come across Benny and the amazing program she is running at Costa Rica Surf & SUP. I initially did not know if I was going to take surf lessons, but Benny and Kelsey helped me overcome my fear of the ocean. They made me feel at ease and calm every step of the way, yet never pressured me to go beyond what I was comfortable doing. This included me walking away from the water one day, but they welcomed me back with open arms the next day and always encouraged me and the other students. Wow—I am so happy I tackled my fear and was able to experience the ocean through surfing. In addition to surf lessons and board rentals, I also recommend taking a SUP adventure with Benny. She took us to a beautiful river where the tranquil beauty of birds, fish, and nature were abundant. It was a peaceful and calming experience. Additionally, Benny was very helpful leading up to our trip and was quick to respond to questions via email and helped with many recommendations both before and during the trip. Had an AMAZING time learning to surf with Costa Rica Surf & SUP! - I just returned from a week in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, where I celebrated my birthday by learning to surf! I'm so glad I found Bennison and Kelsey at Costa Rica Surf & SUP; they both are very skilled, offering lots of encouragement and tips on technique. They know safety comes first, but fun comes right after! The surf shack is just down the path from a gorgeous stretch of beach. I also went stand-up paddleboarding with them, up a lovely, quiet river filled with birdsong--and the ride there went past some of the most stunning beaches I've seen. Most Fun Ever! - I have always wanted to try surfing and finally did it. The folks at Costa Rica Surf and SUP are the best. They go trought the theoretical and practical side of learning to surf. Bennison (the owner) really cares about your surf expeience, not just a job for her. I had a wonderful time and a great experience and I have done a lot of things in my life. Heart and Soul of Costa Rica - From the moment we met Benny and her team, my husband and I felt a connection and comfort level necessary for navigating the beautiful and challenging surf of Santa Teresa. After our first private lesson we immediately made the decision to make surfing the focus of our week long escape from New York City and booked them for lessons every day! We went from day 1- a humbling experience in the whitewater- to paddling out into sizable outside sets surfing with confidence and form by the end of the week. We were convinced we could not do this without the fundamental confidence from Benny coupled with our trust in her and the quality of her approach to teaching. What a Great Time - Pura Vida!!! - Benny and Al gave our family two fabulous surfing lessons last week. Amazing beach (including monkeys in the trees), great instruction, and fun all around. Benny and Al picked us up at our hotel, had great surfboards (exactly what we requested), and are both incredibly positive and upbeat. Surfing Gurus - I spent the last week getting surfing lessons from Benni and Al. I'd never surfed in my life even though I was a competitive swimmer and had spent lots of time in the ocean. Their teaching and tips during our sessions allowed me to surf on the second wave that I caught. This was within 30 minutes of being in the water during our first day. I was impressed with not only their knowledge of surfing, safety, the waves, the conditions, and correct etiquette, but also with their kindness and patience. I felt like I learned how to surf well enough that I could go out by myself now when I go to the beach. And most importantly, through even the fear, I had FUN!! If you only have one day to spend in CR, this is what you should do! - My boyfriend and I just got back from Costa Rica and we had The. Best. Time. Ever. And it’s TOTALLY thanks to Benny and Al. With regards to surf lessons: Benny is such a positive and encouraging person that when part of you is intimidated by the waves, the other part of you gains confidence because she’s at your side. She teaches surf safety super well-- and when you are ready to catch that 1st wave, she’s out there to guide you and keep the other surfers away from claiming your wave. With regards to stand up paddle boarding: This is a great activity when you want to do some sightseeing and try something new. We headed out with Al who took us to a secluded local river, then a beach that is pretty calm. You can paddle pretty far out to a point where you see rocks beneath you—in those rocks you can see fish swimming RIGHT under you (some are HUGE). If you’re up to it and there are some waves, you can try to catch a wave on the paddle board (which is not as easy as it sounds, but IS as awesome as it sounds). Surf & SUP - seriously mind blowing genuine legends - I visited Costa Rica for the first time and landed at Santa Teresa. Through recommendation from a friend I arrived at Benny & Al's place Surf & Sup. I was travelling solo and had never surfed in my life. I can only describe my experience as life changing and the most fun I've ever had. Surfing can be scary, but with such natural and enthusiatic teachers - I managed to catch some serious waves. The guys have a lovely place, their friendly & professional service allows you to build great relationships with them and the sea, and it's more personal and memorable. I'd recommend to pop by for a nice cup of tea, swing in the hammocks and listen to the sweet ukulele - (and that's just whilst you're getting ready!) and get surfing!!! Good time, great teachers - Benny and Kelsi totally made my trip. I took a group lesson with both of them, and then a couple more private ones with Benny. They had lots of smart advice on my surf technique and were really good about finding spots that were challenging but not too far out of my league. I felt like I learned something in every lesson, and improved a lot by the end of my stay. Plus, they're fun to hang out with. I had a great time, and hope to come back soon. Amazing Surf Instructor! I have been surfing for only a few months and when I first got to SantaTeresa I felt totally intimated by the size and the power of the waves. Benny and Alvaro create an amazing experience when learning to surf. They are amazing teachers and one of the funnest couple ever. Benny and Al have worked with me over the last 7 years during my trips to Costa Rica, teaching me how to surf and read the ocean. Best surf and general good times in Santa Teresa. Benny and Al go all out to make trips to Santa Teresa memorable and fantastic. They taught me to surf, and it was with Benny's expert instruction that I stood up on my first wave several years ago. I have been a return guest many times since. They have great local connections for food, fun, and essentially anything you could want in a tropical paradise vacation. I would highly recommend that you contact them if you're considering a trip to Santa Teresa, as they will go above and beyond to make sure you have a great time. The BEST Surf Instructors! I am new to surfing and was fortunate to travel to Costa Rica 2 x this year. Al and Benni are patient, encouraging and lots of fun. I fell in love with the village/town of Santa Teresa and really experienced a sense of accomplishment and relaxation both visits. Absolutely amazing! Costa Rica Surf and SUP is the BEST way to make your trip to Santa Teresa, CR perfect. Benni and Al are the most knowledgable, patient, experienced surf instructors in the area. They know the best places to take you depending on your experience and surf level. Being one of the very few places in the area that offer Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUPing) I would highly recommend them to take you to one of their secret havens to explore. Amazing Experience! My first trip to Costa Rica and my first attempt at surfing and SUP but certainly won't be my last! Al and Benny were just the most patient and sweetest instructors I have ever experienced and were even able to get ths old broad up on a surf board riding the waves! The SUP was a great experience with Al and he took us down a great river which was so relaxing and just plain fun. Laid Back Surfing in Playa Hermosa - I found Benny and Costa Rica Surf and SUP through our hotel's trip advisor reviews and was so happy I did. From the beginning of our communications, Benny was incredibly helpful and responsive. My husband and I scheduled lessons for five days while we were in Santa Teresa. Benny is incredibly laid back and I enjoyed her style in teaching us and reviewing with us what we had learned years before. She allowed us to set our own pace and was encouraging, positive and fun to surf with. In addition to our surf lessons, Benny introduced us to a local chef, Joanne Gerrard Young of The Healing Cuisine and set up a delicious cooking lesson at Joanne's beautiful home. Teachers of Life. CRSS was hired to instruct our Women's Quest group (22 people) during a week long stay in Santa Teresa. Bennison and Al Lopez were our main instructors giving us not only the basics of surfing but infusing their love of the sport, area and positivity of life into our daily gatherings. Their crew of instructors were just as mindful whether it was Anna, Pia or Helen. Each one brought their own perspective and was attentive to our varying skill levels. Not only were my husband and I surrounded by the immaculate beauty of Costa Rica, we had two, amazing people make our trip top notch! My husband and I stayed with Benny and Al for a month in their beautiful, ocean side property, completely exposed to the awe of the jungle.
