The Montezuma and El Carmen Beach Market

Montezuma Beach Market

The market is open at mornings in Montezuma

The communities of Santa Teresa, Cóbano and Montezuma have always been very dependent on themselves. Their remoteness from the centers of power and the most populated cities are two of the reasons why the local population produced what they consumed.

The arrival of the ferry to the community of Paquera facilitated the entry of products, services and people to the Nicoya Peninsula. However, the independent spirit of the inhabitants remained in force.
An example of this is the market held every Saturday in Montezuma and Playa El Carmen. Let’s talk a little about it.

Cobano District, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

District of Cóbano, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Thinking ahead to the 2025 summer season, I feel it is a good time to talk about some places on the Nicoya Peninsula. I want to help future visitors to the area to be more familiar with this part of Costa Rica.

Besides surfing lessons with me, you can enjoy many other things on the peninsula.
Let’s talk about Cobano, the 10th district of the canton of Puntarenas and is where Santa Teresa, Mal Pais, Montezuma, Tambor and the town of Cobano are located.

Costa Rica’s Summer Season 2024 2025

Summer Season coming to Costa Rica

The summer season is coming in Costa Rica and I can’t wait to come back for it and feel the color of the beautiful beaches of Santa Teresa and Mal Pais. I anticipate a great season as more transportation options will be available to get to Costa Rica from Europe, Canada and the United States. In the Nicoya area there are many beaches that have different characteristics for surfing. I would like to talk about those as I often use them for the surf lessons.

Couple surfing with Audrey

Dreams do come true…

I had this dream that someday I would be able to surf with my grandchildren.
My son Liam had spent some time in Santa Teresa and thought it might be a good place for us to visit and learn to surf. He called around and asked for the best recommendation for a surf. Through all the recommendations one surf instructor stood out as exceptional in teaching individuals how to surf.

Charity through photography

Charity through photography

Just some days ago I received the visit of Shelan and Jesse for a surf lesson. Lovely couple, it was a pleasure to meet them and the lessons went smoothly. I hope they enjoyed the lesson as I did.
Before and after the lesson Shelan take some pictures of his partner and some of me. The photos are amazing and I asked her if she was a full-time photographer.

Starting 2022 with a new lesson of life

Starting 2022 with a new lesson of life

In this line of work, we are used to receiving any kind of people. I do not make any distinction when it comes to surf lesson requests, I like to treat people as my equals.
Still, some days ago I received a special petition, one I never received before. It was a couple with a nineteen years old son who has autism. I accepted the request, and I prepare myself for the 4 lessons booked. To be honest I was having doubts about my own decision because I have no previous experience with people with autism.

Starting the high season, with very nice friends

Friends surfing in Santa Teresa

This year, the high season seems to be coming earlier than other years. The rain is scarce, the grey clouds sometimes show up but they quickly go away and the winds are getting stronger. It is not the weather that tells me the high season is here already, but the people who start to come to Santa Teresa, from all around the world.
This time I received good friends Kush and Vanessa! Both are passionate fans of photography.

Montezuma

Montezuma

17 kilometers east of Santa Teresa there is a small and colorful town called Montezuma. The town is located between the beach and the river of the same name.
It is a lively place with restaurants, bars, ice cream shops, stores among others. You can see many people walking down the streets, it is the best way to move over town since the streets are narrow and the transit can be slow.
Also, there are tour operators who offer a taxi boat to Jaco beach and tours to Isla Tortuga.
